Energy and Place |
ReflectionI was the moderator for the debate on nuclear energy. Initially I felt as though nuclear power should be pursued in the US, this was reaffirmed over the course of the project. My belief was strengthened as I learned about the high efficiency and manageable risks involved in nuclear power. The only thing that makes me hesitant on my belief is the longevity of the waste. I would like to further research the possibility of cleaner coal and the drawbacks of renewable such as solar. My environmental ethic was a strong factor in why I felt that a reduction of greenhouse gasses is so important. As a moderator I felt as though I could have done a better job providing background information. In the debate one member falsely claimed that yucca mountain was no longer in use, on the contrary it is still trying to become operational. Another member stated 95% of waste can be reused, after reprocessing only a small amount can be reused (it varies due to multiple factors) and is nowhere near 95%.
