LINK Project Proposal
For three weeks I will be interning with Goff engineering. Goff engineering is a local Durango Engineering firm that does both civil and structural engineering, in addition to that the also do land survey work. Civil engineering involves planning road, buildings, bridges, and other things while structural engineering makes sure things like buildings and bridges are strong enough. They have worked on many projects in and around Durango including the new building for Animas High School. For the majority of my internship I will work with Parker Newby. He is the president of Goff and works as a civil engineer. From him I hope to learn the day to day workings of an engineering firm and also more about the tools and skills engineers must acquire. I have been interested in a career in engineering for awhile and am currently planning to pursue this in college. I hope my experience at Goff will reaffirm my interest in this field. Also, I hope to gain insight on how to go about becoming an engineer. One skill I look forward to learning is how to proficiently operate Auto CADD because almost every engineer uses some form of that program. For my project I would like to draft a bridge in auto CADD that uses my, to be gained, knowledge of civil and structural engineering as well as what I learn in auto CADD. This project will hopefully further develop the aforementioned skills. If an opportunity presents itself it would be very interesting to design something that could be relevant to the twin buttes development project that Goff is actively working on at the moment. This project could be easily developed at the LINK exhibition because I will be creating a model of the bridge that is made to be viewed and analyzed. For the exhibition I will need to be knowledgeable about the process in order to communicate what I did. My internship search process was difficult. I tried contacting a number of large engineering firms such as ball and Lockheed martin but like most engineering firms they were only interested in competitive college students. Because a lot of base skills are required for even base level engineering positions it can be difficult for firms to take a high school student. I intended on contacting Stone Age but they had already taken an intern. I contacted Goff and he was generously willing to take me as an intern. Overall I am very excited yet nervous about starting my internship. |
